Men & Marriage

Three Areas Every Husband Should Consider

1. Communication & Conflict

One of the greatest challenges in marriage is learning how to communicate with love and humility. Men can sometimes avoid difficult conversations, shut down, or focus on fixing the problem instead of simply listening.

James 1:19 – “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.”

Proverbs 15:1 – “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Key Thought:  Marriage requires us to listen before we respond, control our emotions, and choose words that build up rather than tear down.

Discussion:

What makes communication difficult for men, and what can we do to become better listeners and more patient husbands?

2. Spiritual Leadership

God calls husbands to lead their families spiritually—not through control, but through love, sacrifice, service, and example. Spiritual leadership begins with our own relationship with Christ.

Ephesians 5:25 – “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”

Joshua 24:15 – “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Key Thought:  A husband leads spiritually by praying with his family, being involved in church, studying God’s Word, making Christ-centered decisions, and demonstrating his faith through his actions.

Discussion:

What does spiritual leadership look like in everyday life? What is one practical step you can take to lead your family spiritually this week?

3. Intimacy & Connection

A healthy marriage requires intentional effort to maintain emotional, physical, and spiritual connection. Intimacy can easily be pushed aside by work, children, finances, stress, and the demands of everyday life.

Genesis 2:24 – “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Ephesians 5:33 – “Let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”

Key Thought:  Being intentional means making time for your wife, showing affection, listening to her, expressing appreciation, and continuing to pursue her throughout every season of marriage.

Discussion:

What are some practical ways a husband can make his wife feel loved, valued, heard, and pursued?

Closing Thoughts

Marriage doesn’t require a perfect husband. It requires a man who is willing to grow, humble enough to admit when he’s wrong, strong enough to lead by serving, and committed to loving his wife as Christ loved the church.

Challenge:

If you could improve one area of your marriage – communication, spiritual leadership, or intimacy – which would it be, and what is one specific step you can take this week?

Colossians 3:23 – “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”
